In 1957 bestelde het Amerikaanse leger de laatste partij motoren bij Harley. Daarna werden er alleen nog kleiner series gemaakt die in principe gewone modellen waren met een ander kleurtje. Er moeten 418 motoren met de modelaanduiding XLA zijn gemaakt tussen 57 en 64. In 62 werden er daarvan 250 geleverd.

De eerste serie had een luchtfilter zoals op een
WLA zat. Ook de voorrem was van het ingevlochten halve naaf type. Latere modellen zijn te herkennen aan de volle naaf rem. Ook de Amerikaanse kustwacht heeft ze gebruikt.Waarschijnlijk in de blauwe kleur. |

Eigenlijk was het een standaard XLH met een ander kleurtje. De XLA was voorzien van een typeplaatje van aluminium dat vastgeklonken zat op de gereedschapskist of accukap. |

In 1972 werden er nog enkele geleverd maar dan de
AMF-Sportster uitvoering. Olive drab met witte ster op de tank. Opvallend was
das ze waren uitgerust met de “boat tail” achterkant.
Ze moeten geleverd zijn aan US basis in België en Nederland en waarschijnlijk ook Duitsland. In het VIN nummer moet de modelcode 4D staan. Helaas hebben we daarvan geen foto. |

Enkele motoren werden gebruikt in
Vietnam. Deze is in gebruik bij de politie in Saigon. Let op het ovale luchtfilter. Waarschijnlijk is ook dit een XLB en geen A. |

Er was
dus ook een XLB maar die was voor de politie. Gemaakt voor parades en escorte en in
principe de legeruitvoering maar dan zwart of wit maar ook in Olive Drab. De XLB was alleen geleverd
naar landen in Azië zoals Thailand en Indonesië. De fabriek doet erg geheimzinnig over dit model. Volgens hun informatie bestaat hij niet. foto: XLA voor de MP. |

1962 Harley Davidson XLB Sportster
This is a 1962 XLB Sportster. A lot of people have no idea that HD actually made something called an XLB. It’s basically the same bike as an XLH, an XLCH or an XLA. They differ in minor details only. I am aware of 5 other XLB’s. 4 are 1960’s and one is a 1961. The ‘61 bike is in FinlandSo this in fact is a rare bike. No, it was never owned by Elvis Presley or even The Fonzi. Nor did it appear in “Easy Riders”, or “Then Came Bronson”. BUT ! I have been in contact with HD’s research officer who verified that this is in fact a 1962 XLB. She even provided me with the build date from the factory’s build sheet. I am not aware of any other 1962 XLB’s in the entire world. So, it IS rare.As you can see from the pictures (soon) the bike is not currently 100% stock. It has a 1978 Sportster front end with twin disks on it. It has that because I liked to ride the bike and with today’s traffic it just made sense to have a bike that could keep up. It now handles and stops as well as any mid 80’s motorcycles. Not a 996 Ducati, but then it doesn’t pretend to be one.Having said that, I have most of the original parts to return the bike to original should the new owner wish to do so. That includes the correct (1962) Turtle fuel tank, the front forks (correct steel top tree) original front wheel with brakes (correct bevel edge rim) headlight nacelle (Like New) Speedometer and mount (NOS) etc etc. Bike would then be suitable for a museum.The bike is pre ADR which means you don’t need turn signals etc. It has genuine HD mufflers, stamped, and unmodified so no-one can hassle you about the legal stuff. Bike comes with Black/White Qld number plates – 62 XLB.Previously people have told me they like the look of CH's becuase of the magneto. I have a magneto that will drop straight into the bike and will sell it to the new owner for $400. NO, I will not sell it seperatly or give it away for free. I like the coil and points ignition becuase it makes the bike a 1 or 2 kick deal. I can start this bike in thongs. And have done so to the amazement of bystanders and onlookers becuase the bike sounds like rolling thunder once it fires.Have a look at the pictures. This is Real Steel Old School Hot Rod Harley. It’s in the same class as a 32 Ford 3 Window Coupe or a 1969 Corvette. This is not a pretend bike in any way. What you see is what you get. It has lumpy cams and lumpy pistons and it IS a little loud. What would you expect from a bike like this ? Built back in the day when HD built things like that. Before the Enviro Cops made us all buy Whizzers and scooters. Your mother would not want to see you riding this bike. Or even hanging out with the guy who does buy it.Why am I selling this bike ?Several reasons (one wouldn’t be enough). But I need the money for my racing outfit. I’m building a Period 3 Sidecar using a Sportster motor in a featherbed frame. And I’m about to retire and move to Tasmania. If I had a son, I would be passing it on to him. ‘Nuff said.Why is the bike so cheap ?You tell me. If this was a Panhead $25,000 wouldn’t buy it. But I’ve tried selling it twice before and no-one came up with the cash. So, I’m dropping the price a couple grand and someone will walk away with a bargain.I am not a dealer and there is no warranty with the bike. Having said that, I have reciepts for $5,000 worth of work done on the motor by the previous owner. It is a STRONG motor. I can deliver the bike anywhere within 100 Klm’s of Brisbane for free. Other than that you will have to organize and pay for transport.Please don’t bother if you don’t really have the ability to pay for it. I have enough people willing to take the bike from me for free already. Cash is great, cheques will work but you gotta wait until they clear. I will work with the buyer but you have to be serious.And please don't bother E-Mailing me and telling me I don't know something about my bike or that I'm wrong about something. I have been riding Sportsters for over 35 years and I have owned enough of them to know what's what.
XLB's were a "special order" for The Indonesian Air Force. A "Parade Duty"
bike. Whenever the Generals etc had official functions that
required travelling (parades etc) they had an Honour
guard of motorcycles. Originally painted black with Police type spotlights and a
rear luggage rack.I believe there was an order for 12 or 24 bikes (Not sure there at all) and they were all 1960 models. What I suspect is that replacements were ordered when bikes were wrecked, stolen, whatever (blown up ?) This would explain the relatively higher number of 60's bikes compared with so few 61 and 62 bikes. Why XLB ? Well, HD originally made the XL. Then they made an Army version, the XLA. The common one most people know is the XLC. Obviously they made the B just after the A and the C just after the B. Unless of course you can see no pattern in ABC and think that C stands for California or competion or Church or Charlie. The letter H has traditionally been used by HD to denote a higher state of tune. as in FL, FLH etc. So you get an XLH or XLCH. In theory they could have made an XLAH or XLBH but I've never seen one. All of this information I am providing is of course hearsay. HD won't even admit they made a sale to the Indonesian Air Force (Polictical concerns ?) - although that information may well have been lost in time. As a matter of fact when I first spoke to HD their research officer didn't even know they had ever made a single XLB and she was adamant that what I had was an XLR (The race version). It wasn't until she pulled the build sheet for the motor that she believed me. It's K1 which makes it November 1961 which tally's exactly with what kathey Olenskie told me about the build date being November 21st 1961. Technically the bike would probably be best described as a 61 but it was stamped with a 62 year number. This was common practice with American manufacturers who released new models between September and December of the previous year. So you could in fact be driving a 1967 Chevy in 1966. I know, becuase I did. |
